The US$2.7bn Shuweihat S2 power and water plant, owned by Ruwais Power Company, has been inaugurated in the Al Gharbia province of Abu Dhabi

According to a report in the Khaleej Times, H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler's Representative in the Western Region, said that the UAE strived to enhance its stance in research and development in different fields of energy.

Located 260km southwest of Abu Dhabi, the Shuweihat S2 plant would reportedly add 1,510MW of power to the emirate?s grid.

The plant has been estimated to produce up to 100mn imperial gallons of potable water each day, which is 15 per cent of the capital?s water desalination capacity. Electricity and water supply from Shuweihat S2 would be transferred to Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Company (ADWEC) under a 25-year purchase agreement.

Siemens, Samsung, C&T and Doosan are likely to supply equipment for the Shuweihat S2 plant, said company sources.

Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA) director general Abdulla Saif Al Nuaimi said that such projects have helped the emirate diversify its revenue sources and reduce its dependency on oil.
