The largest thermal power plant in the Middle East, with a generation capacity of 2.8GW, has been officially inaugurated in Pakdasht, Iran
Work on the project began in 2003 and cost a total of US$760mn to complete, according to the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB).
The facility will increase Iran?s national electricity generation capacity by six per cent.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Iran's power generation capacity is projected to rise from 67GW to 70GW by the end of the current Iranian calendar year in March 2013.
A total of 16 new power stations, with a total capacity of 2.6GW, have already come on stream in the current Iranian calendar year.
