Qatar has commissioned a 2.4GW power plant and water desalination plant with a capacity of 590,000 cu/m per day for US$824mn

The plant, expected to be one of the largest power and water facilities in the Middle East, will be set up in Umm Al Houl in southern Qatar.

The facility will be built by a special purpose company, of which 60 per cent will be owned by Qatar Electricity and Water Company (Kahramaa), 30 per cent by K1 Energy ? a joint venture between Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) and Mitsubishi Corporation, and five per cent each by Qatar Petroleum (QP) and the Qatar Foundation.

Construction of the power and water plant will begin next year, and will likely be completed by July 2018, confirmed Kahramaa president Essa bin Hilal Al Kuwari.

Being the world?s third largest producer and exporter of natural gas, Qatar?s economic growth averaged 12.8 per cent per annum from 2007 to 2013, and is likely to remain at that level. The rise in economic growth has piqued the demand for power generation and water desalination in the country, leading to the need for a major integrated water and power plant (IWPP).
