The 131km Doha Metro Railway will consist of at least 48 stations, of which half will be built underground at depths of up to 50 metres

Qatar Rail commercial manager Stephen Lines revealed the decision at the recently-held World Stadium Congress, in Qatar. Lines said that the construction has started this year and is expected to be completed in 2019.

Lines added that the light rapid transit (LRT) system would run through crowded areas like West Bay and Lusail, allowing residents to move around the city easily.

Population expansion rate and existing businesses have formed the two main criteria for the location of stations.

To accomplish the delivery of the metro project on time, some 26 tunnel-boring machines will be used in the construction process. For the 400km distance and rail freight system, it will have seven stations and six freight yards that connect with other GCC countries.

The 26 tunnel-boring machines will be expected to create 17mn cubic metres of soil which will be seven times the volume of the pyramids in Egypt. The project will use 800,000 tonnes of steel and more than five million cubic metre of concrete.

Lines claimed that the Mushreib station alone would use more concrete and steel than the Burj Khalifa.
