A new 55 km-long water transmission pipeline, built by Utico, has been commissioned in Ras Al Khaimah
The pipeline is providing uninterrupted water to the Al Ghail district of Ras Al Khaimah, which includes an estimated 50,000 residents, farmlands and commercial enterprises. Beyond the pipeline itself, the project also includes a distribution network of another 60 km, storage tanks, pumping stations and other related structures.
Built at a total cost of about US$20.42mn, the pipeline is something of an engineering feat. The difficult terrain which the pipeline crosses includes 12 hillsides and sand dunes. The desalinated water from the sea is being pumped to the city which is at an elevation of 290 metres.
Richard Menezes, Utico?s managing director, said that the project has a peak capacity of around seven million gallons of desalinated water per day with the possibility of adding another ten million gallons per day. ?The commissioning of the project marks another milestone in the development of Ras Al Khaimah and will have a significant social and economic impact on the region. The construction of the water infrastructure for Al Ghail was not an easy task but we achieved this without a single lost time incident,? he added.
The pipeline was laid according to the instructions of the Ras Al Khaimah government. It required co-ordination and permits from UAE?s Federal Electricity and Water Authority, TRANSCO, Ministry of Defence, Etisalat and RAKGas, among others.
