Jordan has announced that it will spend US$1.4mn to connect residential houses to Madaba Governorate?s main sewage network by Q1 2015
The initiative will be funded by a GCC grant, Jordan?s Ministry of Water stated.
By linking homes to the main sewage line, the government aims to solve the problem of spreading cesspits ? tanks or pits used for waste disposal. They cause recurring incidents of pollution due to poor maintenance of construction, reports have stated.
Through this project, underground water would be preserved and pollution controlled, added the Ministry.
In 2011, the GCC had allocated US$5bn for development projects in Jordan. The grant has been divided between Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE and Qatar with each country paying US$1.25bn, out of which US$425.4mn has been allocated towards water and sanitation projects.
An official said, ?More projects will follow once funding is secured to link households to the sewage network.?
The Ministry has already begun working on blueprints of another wastewater project, meant to cover five residential areas in Madaba Governate for US$353,000.
