The German Development Bank (KfW) has approved funds worth US$105mn for water and wastewater projects in Jordan
According to officials in the government, the projects, being planned in Amman and Zarqa, are meant to assist Jordan with water supply to aid Syrian refugees in the country.
The official said that KfW will partly fund a project for the management and safe disposal of sludge generated from the Al Samra Wastewater Treatment Plant, which treats 75 per cent of the country?s sewage. In addition, the bank will finance the construction of a 20km long wastewater pipeline to transport sewage from Zarqa governorate and parts of Amman to Al Samra Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The US$58mn pipeline will be established next to an existing conveyor that was built 30 years ago, added the official. The current pipeline conveys 80,000 cu/m of wastewater daily from sewage networks in Zarqa and the Ruseifa district, as well as north and east Amman.
Officials from KfW confirmed that the bank will lend US$16mn to build new sewage networks, a wastewater pumping station and a sewage pipe in Zarqa?s Al Sukhneh and Al Hashimiyeh districts.
Meanwhile, US$28mn will be allocated to transfer a wastewater treatment plant from Abu Nuseir in Amman to the West Zarqa Wastewater Pumping Station. This project would be implemented in May 2015.
