South Koreas Hanwha Engineering & Construction has won a US$1.05 billion order to build power and seawater desalination facilities in Yanbu Industrial City (YIC).
The new plant will be completed by 2014 under a contract signed with Marafiq power and water utility company, Hanwha announced in a statement. This is the second contract won by Hanwha in Yanbu within the last two years.
In 2009, Marafiq - the utility company for Jubail and Yanbu - signed a SR2.7 billion (US$720mn) deal with Hanwha to set up a power plant in the industrial city.
Under the 2009 deal, Hanwha will build the two steam turbine generators plants in YIC to generate 500MW each. The first plant, which is to be completed next year, will increase the Marafiq's power output to 1,500MW.
The new Yanbu power plants are essential to meet the requirements of the rapid industrial expansion in the city.
Marafiq currently provides 1.7mn cubic meters of seawater cooling systems per hour, 232,780 cubic meters of seawater desalination and potable water supply per day from its Jubail facilities.
The Yanbu plants provide 99,000 cubic meters of sanitary waste water treatment per day, 84,000 cubic meters of industrial waste water treatment per day, and 1,000MW
