ABB has won orders worth $144 million, from the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), to construct new substations and upgrade existing ones to help address the growing demand for electricity in the region.
In addition to upgrading substations in Riyadh and Hail, ABB will be responsible for the engineering, design, supply, installation and commissioning of a new 380/230 kV substation in Wasit to facilitate power supplies in the Eastern region. The contracts were booked in the second quarter of this year.
It will also build the Roikbah 132 kV substation (east Najran) to help ensure that the Medical City in Jizan receives uninterrupted power supplies and a second 132kV substation in Buriadah, the capital city of the Al-Qassim province in central Saudi Arabia. ABB will also undertake the expansion of the Jizan Central and South Khamis Imshate substations.
"These substations will further strengthen the country's transmission and distribution grid to address growing electricity demand and serve the needs of key infrastructure establishments like medical centers and educational institutions," said Peter Leupp, head of ABB's Power Systems division.
The turnkey orders include civil works and auxiliary systems as well as the supply of key products such as gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), transformers, protection equipment and substation automation.
