Dubai launches 1,000 MW solar energy project

Dubai has launched a solar energy project that will generate 1,000 MW and is estimated to cost US$3.26 billion.

The project which is expected to generate electricity by the end of 2013 will be operated under the supervision of state utility Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa), "will be fully funded by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy," Saeed Al Tayer, vice chairman of DSCE said at a press conference.

An international tender will be held by June 2012 to award contracts for the project, Al Tayer said.

Electricity generation at the project, which will extend over 40 skm along the Dubai-Al Ain road is expected to start by the fourth quarter of 2013, according to Walid Salman, a member of DSCE.

1,000 MW by 2030

"Production will be 10 MW by the fourth quarter of 2013, and will go up to 1,000 MW by 2030," he added.

Al Tayer added that Dubai would devote all necessary resources to realise the sustainable supply and demand for water and energy in support of all sectors of the local economy, from trade to transport to tourism.
