W?rtsil? to supply 47 MW power plant to Saudi Arabian cement firm

The 20-cylinder W?rtsil? 32TS engine is designed to function under extreme ambient conditions.

Global power solutions provider W?rtsil? is set to deliver a 47 MW captive power plant to Saudi Arabian firm Umm Al-Qura Cement Company by February 2015

The turnkey power plant will be located in Taif city in the west of Saudi Arabia, where its specially-designed engine will serve a cement factory in extreme temperatures of up to 50oC at an altitude of more than 1km.

W?rtsil? Power Plants regional director Lars-?ke Kjell said, ?This engine is tailor-made for hot conditions. That?s why we call it the ?sauna? engine. It is a result of our commitment to the extensive and long term development work of engine technology.?

With Umm Al-Qura having placed the order in May 2014, W?rtsil? plans to fast track the project to be delivered early next year and have entered commercial operations by October 2015.

The power plant will consist of five 20-cylinder W?rtsil? 32TS engines and a new 2-stage turbocharged version of the W?rtsil? 32 series, according to the Finnish company.

?The Umm Al-Qura contract strengthens our leading position in Saudi Arabia. W?rtsil? already supplies four out of five power installations in the cement industry in the country,? Kjell added.

Furthermore, the addition of this project means W?rtsil? reportedly becomes responsible for more than 1600 MW of installed power plant capacity in Saudi Arabia.
