Ali Akbar Salehi, responsible for managing Irans atomic energy policy, has confirmed the launch of the Islamic republics first nuclear power plant. The plan was initially announced by Russia which has helped build the facility.
The Bushehr nuclear power plant is outside the port city of Bushehr, around 1,200 km south of the capital Tehran. Russia?s nuclear agency, Rosatom, has confirmed that it will load fuel into the plant on August 21st, marking its launch.
Rosatom spokesman, Sergei Novikov, said its chief, Sergei Kiriyenko, would attend the ceremony in Bushehr on August 21. Novikov said that uranium fuel would be loaded into the reactor, marking the beginning of its physical start-up.
He added that from this would officially make Bushehr a nuclear plant. Russian officials said current sanctions against Iran would not affect the project.
