Mass Global Investment Company (Mass Global), an Iraqi independent power producer, has selected General Electric (GE) to initiate a combined-cycle gas turbines (CCGT) conversion at the Erbil Power Plant in order to increase its output and efficiency
Under the new agreement, GE will supply two steam turbines that will be used to convert the Erbil plant from simple to combined-cycle operation, boosting capacity output by 500MW to 1,500MW.
The extra electricity is expected to cover approximately 25 per cent of the power demand of the Kurdistan Region.
Mass Global chairman?Ahmad Ismail said, ?Converting our Erbil facility to combined-cycle service supports the Kurdistan Regional Government?s policy to increase the thermal efficiency of its power generation facilities.?
GE will manufacture the steam turbines in the US and will ship them to the plant during the second half of 2013. The combined-cycle plant will start commercial service in the second half of 2014.
The project will increase thermal efficiency to more than 48 per cent, making the Erbil plant one of the most efficient power plants in Iraq. The GE C-7 steam turbines will join eight GE Frame 9E gas turbines already in operation at the site.
GE Energy president and chief executive officer for the Middle East, Joseph Anis, commented, "It builds on our growing relationship with Mass Global, supporting its efforts to enable a reliable and efficient supply of electricity needed to fuel the growth and development of the Kurdistan Region."
ENKA Construction & Industry Company (ENKA), the Turkish engineering, procurement and construction company, has been selected to build the converted combined-cycle power plant.
