Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has awarded 15 contracts for building 132/11 kV substations in various areas of the emirate

The utility agency had received 18 bids for the long-term project to supply, install, test, and launch 25 substations. After technical and financial evaluation, contracts for 15 substations were awarded for a total cost of US$326mn. The 132kV substations are expected to meet the growing demand for power in Dubai, a necessity to fulfil the needs of development, economic, and social projects.

The 15 substations will be built in Umm Suqeim 3, Naif, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Al Safouh 2, Dubailand, Za?abeel 2, Nad Al Hamar, Jebel Ali Port, Umm Hurair 2, Al Yalayis, and Al Barsha South 1. Additionally, three more stations will be built in Dubai World Central in Jebel Ali for Expo Dubai 2020. One of them will be online in 2017 and the remaining two will be completed in 2019.

In addition to the substations, DEWA has also ?completed the final report for awarding contracts for extending 94km of 132kV ground cables at an estimated cost of US$118mn. We are also studying and reviewing bids for a project to implement 132/11kV substations over the next four years,? said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, CEO of DEWA. ?The efforts support the UAE Vision 2021, and Dubai Plan 2021, which has set a roadmap that includes ambitious initiatives and development projects. The move also helps DEWA achieve its vision to become a sustainable innovative world class utility,? he added.

Including the four substations that have already been commissioned in 2015, there are now 205 132kV substations in Dubai. DEWA is currently implementing another 34 132kV substations in different areas of the emirate.
