ABB group has clinched a US$120 million contract to design and build a power plant and construct two 400/132kV high-voltage substations that will supply power to the Kurdistan region of Northern Iraq

The 640MW open cycle power plant will generate electricity from gas turbines utilising natural gas from the Khormala oil field and light fuel oil as backup. Two 400/132 kV high-voltage substations will help feed the power into Iraq's regional and national grid, and also supply electricity to the Khormala oil field.

Since 2007, ABB has designed and built three power plants with a total capacity of 2,000MW to supply electricity to the regional grid in the region.

ABB will design, engineer, supply and commission each of the plants on a turnkey basis.

Key product supplies will include generator step-up and other transformers, high-voltage equipment such as a 420kV disconnecting circuit breaker, medium- and low-voltage switchgear, plant automation control and protection systems.

The full project has been scheduled for completion by the end of 2013.
