The Dubai Tram, a project carried out by Dubai?s Road Transport Authority (RTA), was launched by Sheikh Hamadan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai
The Dubai Tram, formerly known as the Al Sufouh Tram, has been designed to support Dubai?s transport network. It links the Dubai Metro and Palm Monorail, running along the Al Sufouh Road and Jumeirah Beach Road from the Mall of Emirates all the way to the Dubai Marina, stated RTA officials.
It will function as an integral part of the transport network within the city, and is connected to the Dubai Metro at two stations ? Damac Station and Jumeirah Lake Towers Station.
Yousuf Ali, CEO of public transport at RTA, said, ?It is a proud moment for RTA. Dubai Tram is one of the biggest achievements for Dubai since RTA?s inception. This is a new mode of transportation for the region and I?m sure people will enjoy it.?
There are 11 stations along the 10.6 km railway network, and the tram will pass by areas such as Dubai Media City, Knowledge Village and Palm Jumeirah as well. The tram is open for public use from 6:30 am, with trips every ten minutes during peak hours and every 12 minutes during non-peak hours.
Each tram can carry 405 passengers, and is equipped with one gold cabin, four silver cabins and two cabins for women and children. The first stage of the tramway is built to serve 27,000 passengers daily. The second stage of the tramway will comprise an extension of four kilometres and six stations, and cater to 66,000 passengers daily.
