Steel engineering firm Waagner Biro has secured a five-year US$28.4mn contract for the maintenance of road structures in Dubai

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded Waagner the project, under which the firm will have to carry out inspection, preventative and corrective work on the Deira side of M1009/D1 and the Bur Dubai side of M1009/B1.

Waagner will also work on creek bridges, vehicular underpasses, flyovers, footbridges, pedestrian subways, camel underpasses, box culverts, dhow wharfage, underpass pumping stations, fire pump stations, service culverts, pipe culverts, water features on the roads and wooden street furniture.

The firm will also be on emergency callout for road accidents, breakdowns, heavy rainfall and sandstorms.

The engineering firm recently won a US$2.8mn design and build contract for footbridges over Umm Suqeim Road in Dubai.

As part of the RTA's road improvements programme along Umm Suqeim Road between Al Quoz 3 and Al Barsha, Waagner Biro will construct the bridge foundations, staircases, bridge superstructure and lifts.

The bridges will have lengths of between 55 metres and 65 metres, said Waagner CEO Peter Brechtelsbauer, with the work on the project scheduled for completion by December 2013.
