Passengers travelling through Dubai International Airport in April 2015 have increased to 6,510,653; up almost 5.7 per cent compared to 6,159,634 passengers during the same month last year
April was the third month this year when the monthly traffic at the airport has crossed 6.5mn passengers. So far, passenger traffic growth has gone up by 6.5 per cent compared to the same period one year ago. In terms of absolute numbers, the largest increase came from the Indian subcontinent, with 167,652 more passengers from the region. This was followed by the Gulf states, up by 92,069 passengers and western Europe, which contributed an increase of 65,175 passengers.
In percentage terms, the biggest increase came from eastern Europe. Passengers from the region increased by 74.6 per cent YoY in April. According to Dubai Airports, this was a result of flydubai?s starting services to Slovakia, Bosnia, Bulgaria and Croatia as well as Emirates? service to Hungary and Transavia?s service to Bulgaria.
Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, said, ?We are again expecting record traffic levels at Dubai International Airport this summer and again, we will be deploying additional resources from the kerb to the boarding gates to ease the flow of passengers through our facility.?
The number of aircraft landings and take-offs was 33,279; 6.5 per cent more than 31,234 a year earlier. Year to date, the total number of landings and take-offs has gone up by six per cent.
The amount of freight handled by Dubai International Airport was 204,075 tonnes in April, 3.6 per cent lower on a YoY basis. Year to date, cargo is down 4.7 per cent to 798,771 tonnes in the first four months of the year. Cargo volumes are likely to continue to decline this year due to all freight cargo operations moving to Al Maktoum International last year.
