Qtel wins Doha airport telecom contract

Qatar Telecom awarded contract for telecom services at Doha airport.

Qatar Telecom (Qtel) was awarded a contract to provide telecom services at the new US$11 billion Doha airport, scheduled to open in December.

Qtel was one of 15 companies invited to bid for the contract, including Vodafone Qatar, Reuters quoted an airport official as saying.

The company stated that it had spent US$10.2mn so far on building the airport's telecoms infrastructure.

Expanding in Iraq

Recently, Qtel's CEO, Nasser Marafih said that the company was looking to expand its operations across North Africa and increase its services in Iraq.

Marafih said that Qtel would seek new mobile phone licenses in Iraq and would look at the possibility of bring 3G to Iraq's communications network.

Considering Libya

He added that Qtel is also considering options in Libya if the telecoms market opens up after the fall of Colonel Gaddafi.
