Al Ain municipality has revealed plans to erect a pedestrian bridge near one of the UAE city?s busiest interchanges, the Khalid Bin Sultan road

The most important aspect of the construction is that the bridge will be erected in just one night, as claimed by an official of the municipality, and that during the installation, traffic on the road will be stopped only for 20 minutes.

A Gulf News report quoted the official as saying, ?The bridge will be some 36 metres long, two-and-half metres wide and some six metres high over Khalid Bin Sultan road.

?It will be a hi-tech bridge that will be built elsewhere and installed at the site in just one night.?

The bridge will have an up-to-date design. Special care will be taken to design it keeping safety of public in mind. It will also have disabled access and there will be special elevators at both ends.

The project area has been selected keeping in mind the high traffic volume and increasing pedestrian movement. The northern side of the bridge will be towards Oasis Hospital and the adjacent residential area. The other side will house a number of service facilities, cafes, municipality depots, industrial areas and a church.

According to the municipality?s estimates, more than 56,300 vehicles use the road every day. This number may rise to 80,000 by 2020.

Al Ain municipality director general Mattar Mohammad Saif Al Nuaimi signed an agreement with Nael & Bin Harmal Hydroexport Company for the construction of the bridge. He said that the project was part of the municipality?s efforts to create a pedestrian-friendly environment.

The municipality said that building the bridge will take five months to complete.
