Doha has launched a project to build an undersea tunnel linking the West Bay lagoon area north of Doha to the new Hamad International Airport in the south of the city

According to a report in Qatari daily The Peninsula, the tunnel will start as a two-lane bridge in both directions from West Bay heading into the sea and then emerging on the southern side of the city near the airport.

Another three-lane undersea tunnel will link from the new airport road to New Doha, while a third, three-lane bridge and tunnel will also connect from Lusail to New Doha.

Sub-lanes will branch off from the tunnel to areas such as the new Museum of Islamic Art and Katara.

A study previously completed by engineering and construction solutions provider COWI evaluated several methods of relieving the expected pressure on routes between north and south Doha due to the huge amount of new development planned for the city.

It evaluated several possible options including a potential 6km long bridge over Doha Bay, a 5km tunnel underneath the city itself and the likely impact of the metro system.

It confirmed there was a need for a new link, and highlighted a 10km, subsea tunnel as ?the preferred solution?.
