Volvo Penta has revealed two new off-road engines at this year?s Intermat construction show in Paris

The new five and eight-litre diesel D5 and D8 engines feature a newly-designed platform with increased displacement as well as 2.5 per cent lower fuel consumption, the company said.

The new engines offer improved engine block stiffness and higher torque at lower speed, according to the Swedish automotive manufacturer, which also stated that a reduction in carbon emissions was a key consideration in their design.

Adaptations are available for the D5 and D8, in order to meet Stage II/Tier 2, Stage IIIA/Tier 3 equivalent and Tier 4 Final/Stage IV emissions standards, with the latter using only selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology, rather than a diesel particulate filter (DPF) or diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC).

The use of SCR-only technology, as well as the common footprint that all of Volvo Penta?s engines share, also simplifies installation for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

The Intermat trade show takes place every three years, and is one of the largest international shows for the construction equipment, machinery, and technology and materials sector.
