Italian construction company Salini Impregilo has won a US$337mn construction contract in Qatar

The Qatar Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has awarded the contract to the Italian company to develop infrastructure at a residential area in Shamal, situated north of Doha. The Shamal project is part of the Framework Contract for Local Roads and Drainage Programme (LR&DP). Salini Impregilo, which is part of the consortium created with Bin Omran of Qatar, won over the three competitor consortia from the Gulf, Asia and the USA, stated company officials.

According to the contract signed by the two companies, the construction of primary urban infrastructures in Shamal should be completed within a 30-month time span. Salini Impregilo is responsible for the implementation of Package 01, which covers approximately 25 per cent of the area to be developed, and also includes the roads and infrastructures of the Al Zubara district in the western area, the northern area of the central district of Abu Al-Dholouf and the southern area of Al-Shamal.

In addition, the planning and design of the micro-tunnelling and of the water system for irrigating the green areas will also be carried out by the Italian company.

The entire area for residential development measures 10.43 sq km in area and is connected to Doha through the North Road.

The Shamal contract follows the signing of the US$859mn contract by Salini Impregilo recently to build the Al Bayt stadium, which is one of the key venues of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Italian company is already working on the Red Line North of the Doha Metro, a 13 km-stretch through seven underground stations and the Abu Hamour hydraulic project.
